iPhone 4 boost Apple revenues over £12 billion

Apple has reported quarterly revenues above £12 billion ($20 billion), after the launch of the iPhone 4 saw a huge surge in sales, eventually allowing its smartphone to sell over 14 million units in the three month period.
While the iPhone 4 is clearly a runaway success, the iPad tablet has also been a qualified success with almost 4.2 million of the slate PCs sailing off shelves worldwide.
Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, spoke out about these very impressive figures which can surely silence any detractors who assumed that issues with the iPhone 4's antenna system might have put the brakes on Apple's continued ascent.
Mr Jobs said that the sales of the iPhone 4 were occurring as quickly as the firm was able to build and ship the units, allowing it to eclipse Canadian rival Research in Motion (RIM), which only managed to sell 12 million BlackBerry handsets over the same period.
Mr Jobs expressed his surprise at seeing such a boom in Apple's revenue, which is the equivalent of $4 billion in earnings after tax, breaking previous records for the Californian firm.
By selling more than 14 million iPhone 4 units, Apple has seen an increase in its smartphone sales of 91 per cent, compared to the same period in 2009. Mr Jobs even dropped a hint that he is expecting increased growth in the approach to Christmas.
Apple's Peter Oppenheimer, joined Jobs in elucidating his pleasure at the increased revenue generated by the iPhone 4. His optimism about the future was compounded when he said the first three months of next year would see revenues of $23 billion generated, earning those who hold stock in Apple almost five dollars per share.
While speaking about Apple's success with the iPhone 4, Mr Jobs took the opportunity to question suggestions made by rival Google, that the iOS platform is inferior to its own Android software because of its heavily controlled nature.
