iPhone 5 announced

After a full year's worth of speculation, the iPhone 5 has finally been revealed by Apple, which means all the rumours can be put to bed and fans can get on with booking their spot on the pre-order lists.
The styling of the iPhone 5 echoes that of the iPhone 4 and 4S, although it is 20 per cent lighter and 18 per cent slimmer than its predecessors.
It is also longer, with its 4.0 inch touchscreen display stretching its chassis upwards, without adding much to the width. The screen offers the same pixel density as was afforded by the Retina Display, but because of the increased area, it now has a resolution of 640x1136.
The eight megapixel camera on the rear of the iPhone 5 has the same censor resolution as that of the 4S, although it is a little more compact. The front-facing camera can now record 720p HD video, which should improve the quality of FaceTime communication.
Between 16GB and 64GB of onboard storage space will be available via different models, although Apple still refuses to offer removable flash memory compatibility.
In terms of processing power, you get the A6 CPU which Apple claims to be twice as powerful as the chip found on the 4S. Graphics processing capabilities have also been doubled, although quite what this will translate into, in terms of real time performance, remains to be seen.
The iPhone 5 will come preinstalled with iOS 6, which Apple has adapted to make sure that it fills all of the new widescreen real estate that is on offer. App developers will also have to work on their software to bring it to the bigger screen.
Analysts are expecting big things from the iPhone 5 in terms of sales, but there are sceptics who claim that Apple has not done enough to update its handset. While 4G connectivity is onboard, there is no NFC, which many had anticipated.
