iPhone sales to rise 70 per cent

The sale of iPhones is set to rise 70 per cent ahead of the launch of Apple's fifth smartphone this month, although the manufacturer and mobile networks will not be the ones reaping the rewards.
This is because this is the increase expected in the number of people who are selling their old mobile phone in order to part ways with an outdated model and generate a bit of cash to buy the updated replacement.
This figure has come from online auction giant ,eBay, which anticipates a large leap in the number of people listing their old smartphone.
Of course there will be many more thousands of people in the UK and around the world who choose to recycle their old handsets, with companies who offer a cash payment for used mobiles that can help offset some of the cost of buying the iPhone 5.
The iPhone 4 was launched over a year ago and people who bought it during its heyday will almost certainly want to pass it on to a new owner or a recycling company, in order to unlock some of its residual value now that there is a successor looming to replace it.
There is past evidence to suggest the number of people selling their old iPhone will actually outstrip the number of people buying a new one, because in 2010 the iPhone 3GS outsold the iPhone 4 in this way shortly after it launched.
Of course the iPhone 4 will be compatible with the same iOS 5 operating system as the fifth iPhone and it will continue to be a competitive, attractive and desirable handset well into the future, which is why people who sell their old iPhone are able to get a good price for it if they compare the options online.
